Wonder Fianu is an MSc Candidate in Bioinformatics of Infectious Diseases and Pathogen Genomics at Stellenbosch University and an MSc student supported through the GenPath Africa Programme at the Centre for Epidemic Response and Innovation (CERI). His research focuses on antimicrobial resistance and pathogen genomics, with particular interest in applying computational approaches to understand clinically important resistance mechanisms in bacterial pathogens.
His current MSc research investigates mutations of uncertain significance associated with bedaquiline resistance in the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex. The project integrates pathogen genomic data with computational structural biology and machine learning to characterize resistance-associated mutations and generate evidence to support the interpretation of variants whose clinical significance remains uncertain. His work combines genomic analysis, variant prioritization, protein structure analysis, molecular modelling, and computational approaches to assess the potential functional and structural effects of mutations.
Wonder has a background in pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences, which informs his interest in connecting molecular mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance with drug action and therapeutic outcomes. His broader interests include antimicrobial resistance, pathogen genomics, bioinformatics, structural bioinformatics, computational drug discovery, and data-driven approaches to infectious disease research. Through his training at CERI and Stellenbosch University, he is developing expertise in reproducible computational workflows and the integration of genomic, structural, and molecular data to address antimicrobial resistance challenges relevant to Africa.
