Thulani Nkosi is a PhD candidate supervised by Dr Elizna Maasdorp and Dr Emilyn Costa Conceição in Centre for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology at Stellenbosch University. His doctoral research focuses on the development of the Genomes of Mycobacteria in South Africa (GEMISA) platform, an innovative bioinformatics framework designed to support genomic surveillance of tuberculosis and antimicrobial resistance, contributing to public health decision-making and disease control efforts in South Africa.

He holds an MSc in Biotechnology, a BSc Honours in Biochemistry, and an Advanced Diploma in Biotechnology from University of Johannesburg. His academic background combines molecular biology, microbiology, biotechnology, and computational biology, with research experience spanning bioinformatics, proteomics, metagenomics, and microbial genomics. His MSc research explored the proteomic and in silico characterization of bacterial proteins with potential biotechnological applications, while his earlier studies investigated microbial communities using metagenomic approaches.

Alongside his research, Thulani is actively involved in higher education as a lecturer and mentor, contributing to the training of undergraduate and postgraduate students in genetics, microbiology, biotechnology, and bioinformatics. He is passionate about advancing genomics research in Africa, developing sustainable scientific capacity, and applying computational tools to address infectious disease challenges.
