Costa Conceicao

Dr. Emilyn Costa Conceição is a biologist trained at the Federal University of Pará, Brazil, with a Master’s degree in Infectious Diseases from the State University of Pará and a PhD in Microbiology from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in partnership with Paris-Sud University, France. She gained extensive experience in clinical trials and routine bacteriology and mycobacteriology diagnostics at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (INI/Fiocruz), where she also completed postdoctoral research in Clinical Research in Infectious Diseases. In 2021, she joined Stellenbosch University as a postdoctoral researcher in the Tuberculosis Genomics Group within the Division of Molecular Biology and Human Genetics. In 2025, she joined the Centre for Epidemic Response and Innovation (CERI), where she leads the Genomics of Antimicrobial Resistance (Gen-AMR) Unit. Her research focuses on next-generation sequencing to advance precision medicine and precision public health through initiatives such as TORCH (SMARTT trial), GenPath (PARR-TB), and the REVIGET/REVIGEN-Brazil consortia. Her interests include mycobacteriology, genomic epidemiology, bioinformatics, capacity building, and scientific communication. In 2025, she founded IGNITE, a mentorship programme supporting women in science.
