Beyond the Lab: Where Science Meets Industry, Innovation, and Impact

Join us for a seminar on translating scientific research into industry, innovation, and real-world impact with Prof. Brian Fox (UW–Madison).

We are excited to invite you to join the next #CERIseminar:

Date: Friday, 10 April 2026

Time: 11:00 – 12:00 SAST

Venue: CERI Seminar Room, Stellenbosch University | Online (Click here to register)

Topic: Beyond the Lab: Where Science Meets Industry, Innovation, and Impact

Talk summary: Great science does not end at publication. In this seminar, Prof. Fox explores what it takes to translate research into real-world solutions, from diagnostics and bioengineered products to industry partnerships and pandemic preparedness tools. Drawing on his work in enzymology, technology transfer, and the UW–Madison/Stellenbosch partnership, he invites us to ask: what does our science actually do for the world?

About the Speaker: Prof. Brian G. Fox is Chair of the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His research focuses on enzyme structure and function, with applications in synthetic fibres, pharmaceuticals, and biodegradable plastics. As an incoming STIAS Fellow (July 2026), he is combining genomic sequencing with enzyme function and AlphaFold structure prediction to advance pandemic preparedness. He is also a co-architect of the African STARS Fellowship Programme, building genomics, diagnostics, and vaccine design capacity across Africa.
